Qualifications for Employment

 Education (Minimum Requirements):

Master’s Degree required, preferred in education, counseling or related discipline

Employment Experience Preferred:  One year of experience working with post-secondary, diverse and non-traditional populations in a counseling capacity or two years of working with post-secondary, diverse and non-traditional populations. 

Pertinent Other: Must possess strong counseling skills and be interested in and committed to working as part of a team to support student development.   Excellent customer service working with diverse communities using patience and active listening. Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to share complex information with a diverse population.

Nature and Scope of Duties

The Student Development Specialist reports to the Dean of Student Development/Director of the Center for Careers and Transfer and/or their designee and performs the following duties within the Student Development Unit:

Assists with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of theory-based and evidence informed best practices and programming to foster student development, with a focus on career, transfer, personal and professional development.

Develops and maintains relationships with employers and four-year institutions to support students’ career and transfer goals. 

Meets with students individually and in groups in the capacity of career and/or transfer counselor.

Assists with the planning and implementation of career and transfer events and programming.

Supports students in developing academic, personal and career success plans focused on meeting the demands of their coursework and personal responsibilities to facilitate reaching personal, education and career goal attainment.  

Provides informational presentations to students and prospective students about student development offices and support offerings. 

Develops and maintains relationships with academic departments and campus offices for the purposes of offering student support and encouraging referrals to student development offices. 

Assists with the implementation and maintenance of web-based tools.

 Assists with the Graduate Follow-up Survey and provides data and reports based on student support and outreach efforts as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned.


This is a 12-month, Full-Time position with a salary range of $48,000-$51,500.
