RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:  Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of Rensselaer County.
 
Job Description: The position entails routine and repetitive manual work calling for the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and occasional, minor maintenance tasks. Cleaning tasks are performed according to a well-established procedure and maintenance tasks are performed under direct supervision or according to specific instructions that apply. Supervision is received from a Custodial Supervisor II or by a more experienced mentor. Supervision over the work of other custodians is not a responsibility of employees in this class.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Working knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies & equipment. Ability to follow simple oral instructions. Willingness to perform routine cleaning and other manual tasks. Ability to get along well with other co-workers and staff. Thoroughness, dependability and good physical condition with the ability to lift at least 25 lbs. 
 
Training will be provided to those who lack experience.
 
DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES: The Custodial Worker under the supervision of a Custodial Supervisor II, will perform routine building cleaning work and will do related work as required:
 
• Sweeps and mops floors and stairwells.
• Dusts woodwork, office furniture and other related equipment
• Wash windows, walls, blackboards, sinks, desktops and other fixtures
• Polish stainless steel, furniture and railings.
• Empty waste baskets, collect and dispose of trash and recycling 
• Winter Snow clearing of front entranceways (10 feet) and Salt spreading
• Arranges chairs, tables & other equipment for special use of facility buildings
• Replace paper products, soap and air freshening products in labs and restrooms.
• Strip, seal and finish floors during summer or lag periods.
 
This is a full-time 12-month, 40-hour work week position with an hourly rate of $17.55. Start date is immediate.
