Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) located in scenic Upstate NY is a multi-campus College with locations in Troy and Malta New York. HVCC offers more than 80 degree and certificate programs in three schools: Business and Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have been legal residents of New York State for at least FOUR months immediately preceding the date of the test. Pursuant to subdivision 4a of Sec. 23 of the Civil Service Law, preference may be given to successful candidates who have been legal residents of the municipality to which the appointment is to be made for at least FOUR months preceding the date of the written test.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The duties involve the responsibility of public safety on the college campus.  The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Public Safety at the college with considerable leeway allowed to exercise independent judgment in enforcing the law on college grounds.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: 

• Enforce the laws of the State of New York;

• May summon local police, fire departments and ambulance services in cases of 

law violation, fire or other emergencies;

• Control and direct traffic on campus roadways and parking lots;

• Patrol the campus on foot or in a patrol vehicle to protect people and property, 

maintain order and ensure compliance with college rules and regulations;

• Investigate complaints received personally or as assigned by the supervisor;

• Investigate motor vehicle accidents on campus;

• Enforce traffic and parking regulations;

• Supervise Campus Security Officer’s, Security Guards and Dispatchers on 

routine duties and at special events;

• Enforce compliance with fire and safety regulation;

• Respond to medical emergencies and provide assistance based on level of 

training;

• Give information and directions to students and visitors;

• Keep records and make oral, computer and written reports;

• Operate radio, telephone, computer and other dispatching equipment;

• Perform other related duties that may be assigned. 

 

 

Position Qualifications:  Good knowledge of New York State laws; good knowledge of the rules and regulations of the college Public Safety Office; good knowledge of safety issues; ability to carry out oral and written directions; ability to deal effectively with people; ability to act quickly in an emergency situation; initiative; good judgment; mental alertness; tact and courtesy; good physical condition. Ability to read and see objects under ambient, limited or artificial lightning and at reasonable distance with sufficient clarity; • • Ability to hear normal speech and other audible events; and to verbally communicate over a two-way radio; • Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time; • Ability to work indoors and outdoors; • Must possess the strength and ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry a minimum of 150 pounds; • Must possess the ability to remain calm and withstand unpleasant situations of injuries, grief, anxiety and trauma; Must possess the ability to defend oneself against physical attack, restrain violent persons and/or take physical charge of a person who may resist arrest; The employee's physical condition shall be commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

(a) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT: 

The employee must possess a valid NYS motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment and maintain such license for the duration of employment.

Possession of an appropriate, valid NYS Driver’s License.

 

The employee must possess a valid NYS motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment and maintain such license for the duration of employment.

 

The employee must possess one of the following first-aid certifications within one year of the date of appointment and maintain valid certification for the duration of employment: Responding to Emergencies through the American Red Cross, or First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician certification.

 

Candidates must successfully complete an approved Municipal Police Training Council Training Program for Campus Peace Officer as described in Section 2.30 of the Criminal Procedure Law within one year of appointment and maintain such certification thereafter for the duration of employment.

 

Candidates must be eligible to obtain a firearms license pursuant to Section 400 of the New York State Penal Law.

Hourly rate for this part-time position is $28.3075.
